Senator Huffines Files Education Savings Account Bill
SB 1178 will empower parents & give school choice to those who need it most
Austin- State Senator Don Huffines (R - SD 16) filed legislation that will create an Education Savings Account program to empower parents with school choice options and educational opportunities. SB 1178 focuses on students who need it the most: those with disabilities and those who are educationally disadvantaged. Eligibility will be capped at one half of one percent of total school students. It is currently scheduled for a committee hearing on March 26th, 2015.
"Texas' current model of one-size fits all education is antiquated, and something must be done for our students and parents, as well as taxpayers and faculty. It's past time that we empower parents to make the education decisions that make sense for them and their child." said Senator Huffines. "The Education Savings Account program will meet Texans' demands for greater opportunities for their children by empowering parents to be consumers on behalf of their children. Public schools will always be at the center of education in Texas, but they must not have a monopoly."
