Senator Don Huffines' Statement On Sheriff Valdez Supporting Sanctuary Policies
Senator Huffines supports maintaining the rule of law and keeping Texans safe.
DALLAS – State Senator Don Huffines (R – SD 16) released this statement today about Sheriff Valdez's stance on supporting sanctuary city policies:
"The federal government has refused to properly secure the border, which places a costly burden on state and local governments. Texas has acted: we funded border security at a record high $800 million dollars. Sheriff Valdez must also take action to uphold the rule of law and keep Texans safe, and she should start by reversing her recently announced sanctuary policy.
"The Sheriff’s refusal to act places the residents of Dallas County in danger. Illegal immigrants have broken the law, and by the time they are detained in a Dallas County jail, they have likely done so twice. We should suspect that even more crime will follow if they are released, as Sheriff Valdez proposes to do.
"The rule of law is the bedrock of civilized society, and it must be defended vigorously. Sanctuary policies place Texans at unnecessary risk and encourage illegal behavior. Dallas County should not have a Sheriff who has chosen to put her own convenience and the prerogatives of illegal aliens ahead of the safety of legal residents and citizens."
