Victory in YOUR Texas Senate!

On Thursday, May 4, the Texas Senate unanimously passed my Senate Bill 1122, the bill to abolish Dallas County Schools (DCS)! The corrupt bureaucracy in Dallas County runs buses and provides other services to Independent School Districts (ISD), but it does not hire teachers or educate students. The entity has been mired in several controversies regarding unreliable school bus service, dangerous driving that included at least 480 red lights run, and a massive multi-million dollar financial mismanagement scandal that threatens to sink the agency. At the bill’s hearing before the Senate Education Committee, the Dallas ISD Superintendent testified in support of my bill.

Thursday, May 4 was a great day in the Texas Senate, and I have a big status update for you: the Senate passed two major priorities for SD 16 and all of DFW!

Repealing the Corrupt & Dangerous Bus Bureaucracy in Dallas

On Thursday, May 4, the Texas Senate unanimously passed my Senate Bill 1122, the bill to abolish Dallas County Schools (DCS)! Dallas County Schools gets an 'F' for transparency, an 'F' for accountability, and an 'F' for honesty. As a businessman and parent, I am outraged by the poor and dangerous track record DCS has provided for students and schools. As a watchdog for Texas taxpayers, I am appalled at the financial mismanagement and multi-million dollar debt that DCS built on the backs of taxpayers. Students, taxpayers, and schools deserve better than this unnecessary and corrupt bureaucracy.

With the addition of an amendment, Senate Bill 1122 passed unanimously out of the Senate! While the Legislature has full authority to abolish DCS, the amendment gives the taxpayers and voters of Dallas County the opportunity to have their voices heard by placing the proposition to abolish DCS on the November ballot.

I am glad I had the opportunity to work cooperatively with all Senators and stakeholders on this important piece of legislation for Dallas County. It's no longer a question of 'if' DCS goes away, but 'when' and 'how.' As an elected legislator, I am obligated to act, and I’m honored that all 30 of my colleagues in the Texas Senate joined me in this effort. Instead of allowing DCS to collapse from its own failures, which could happen in the middle of a school year, SB 1122 gives the taxpayers the power to abolish this corrupt entity and creates the orderly and thoughtful wind-down that is necessary to protect students, taxpayers, and schools. Now the bill is in the Texas House for their consideration. We must get rid of this corrupt bureaucracy that threatens our students!Read more about this corrupt & dangerous bureaucracy:

Ending the “Vehicle Inspection Tax” on Texas Drivers

The science is clear: so-called “safety” inspections don’t make our roads safer. They’re just a useless & outdated tax on your time and money, and that’s unacceptable!

FullSizeRender_6.jpeg

Multiple studies confirm that vehicle inspections do nothing to make our roads safer, and that's why drivers in 34 states don't have to endure that needless chore. The federal government stopped requiring inspections 41 years ago! Even the auto insurance industry testified that their data show that inspections do nothing to make roads safer, and AAA Texas supported the bill. Texas can no longer justify requiring its citizens to undertake this burdensome & costly waste of time and money each year.

Arguably the most onerous and needless mandate that state government imposes, the vehicle inspection tax burdens an average of 50,000 Texans per day. That’s why I’m so happy the Senate passed SB 1588 to repeal this needless tax on drivers' time & money. With the passage of Senate Bill 1588, Texans will save approximately $130 million per year, and we’ll have 9 million more hours to spend on more productive uses.

Now, Senate Bill 1588 is off to the Texas House. I’m optimistic that Texas will become the next state to relieve drivers of this bad tax on their time and money!

As your state Senator, I work for you, not the government! I don’t accept the pay, per diem, or any benefits, such as health care or pension. I don’t even accept travel reimbursements. That makes sure that I stay grounded and constantly aware of who I serve: the hard-working residents and taxpayers of Senate District 16!

To fully experience liberty, we must have a virtuous society. Instead of turning to government for answers or solutions, I believe in you and the power of the individual to solve most of our issues. By working together, everything is possible. Texas’ greatest days are yet to dawn. Our future is limitless!
